 Hydrogen generators are used in labs or in the field to provide low-cost, safe hydrogen supply. The gas is produced by electrolytic disassociation of water. Applications include gas chromatographs, fuel cells and ICP-MS collision gas. If purity better than 99.999% is required, a palladium membrane purifier can be added downstream of the generator to remove excess moisture.
H2 generators may have outlet moisture > 5 ppm, so palladium offers better performance as compared to desicant dryers, getter or catalytic purifiers. This is because palladium has a theoretical infinite lifetime, whereas other technologies use consumable media that will have short lifetimes for high moisture content sources.
